Ontario Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie speaks after winning 57 per cent of the vote in a leadership review at the Ontario Liberal Party annual general meeting on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2025.
Ontario Liberal leader Bonnie Crombie announced her resignation just hours after announcing her plan to stay on the job despite a 57 per cent vote in favour of her leadership.
A few hours after Crombie stood on stage at the Sheraton Centre º£½ÇÉçÇø¹ÙÍøHotel and announced plans to rebuild the party, Crombie issued a written statement announcing a plan to step down.
“Even though I received a majority of support from the delegates, I believe it is the best decision for the Ontario Liberal party to facilitate an orderly transition towards a leadership vote,” she wrote.

“I have advised the party president of my decision to resign upon the selection of my successor.”
Her decision comes after a mandatory leadership review vote that found just 57 per cent of the delegates wanted Crombie to stay in her role. Another 43 per cent voted for a leadership contest within the next year.
“While she had a path forward, I think that this prompt resignation will allow the party to genuinely rebuild around a new leader,” said Crombie supporter Andrew Perez, after the news broke.
