Who gets the blame in Leafland this time? The latest GM Brad Treliving听and coach听Craig Berube听tried hard despite being hamstrung with 53 per cent of cap space tied up in the “core four” players. We have听former GM Kyle Dubas to thank for starting this concept by caving into听William Nylander in 2018 an hour before the deadline and signing him to eight years for $92 million. This paved the way for huge contract renewals for Auston Mathews, Mitch Marner and John Tavares. With the payroll cupboard more than half empty with these four salaries, attracting and signing big, front-line forwards and defencemen was severely limited. In 2018, Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan promoted Dubas (former GM OHA Greyhounds) to GM and demoted then GM Lou Lamoriello (three cup winner) to “special adviser.” Humiliated, Lamoriello walked out the door and the circus began. Perhaps it is time to scrape down to the floorboards and reconsider听Shanahan’s reign after听11 futile years.听

Maple Leafs problems lie in senior management听
Critics are now expressing opinions on necessary player changes. It seems to me that it is premature to be discussing changes to the team make up. I suggest the owners first examine the team’s senior management. That is where the problem lies.听Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan and GM Brad Treliving听have not been able to put together a team that can win in the playoffs. Therefore, they should be replaced. Let their replacements make the decisions on the composition of the team. Hopefully they will do a better job.

A new crop of players might revitalize the team
With the Leafs, it’s almost a case of insanity, doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome. It’s time to dismantle the team, get rid of the high-priced help that seems to have forgotten why they’re paid the big bucks, and start looking for young, hungry new players who have careers to build. Instead of a team of “super stars” that seem to phone in their on-ice performances when it matters while collecting exorbitant pay cheques, a new crop of players might revitalize the team, seeking to build their reputations rather than resting on them. It’ll take a while , but that’s what investing is all about.

Boycotting the Maple Leafs
I refuse to watch the 海角社区官网Maple Leaf hockey team unless it is a game during the final Stanley Cup series. This might take several years. Sunday鈥檚 Game 7 was identical to the disastrous Game 5; the Leafs didn鈥檛 show up.

Disgraceful Leaf fans please stay home in the future
鈥楬ow does this keep happening鈥: Maple Leafs fans vent online following Game 7 loss to Florida, May 19
Almost as bad as watching the Leafs on the ice, was the behaviour of our 海角社区官网fans in the stands. To the Leaf fans who threw jerseys, beer and whatever else on the ice: you are a disgrace to Leafs Nation and fans everywhere. Your thoughtless behaviour could have injured a player or referee. Your boos and jeering that started in the 2nd period couldn鈥檛 have bolstered any confidence in the team. What were you thinking and how does that help?
Was the game a disappointment? Sure. Do changes need to be made to the team? OK. But remember, to play in the playoffs, you have to get there first 鈥 and our core four were major factors in the Leafs winning the division. Do we want more? Of course. But support our team and keep the faith for the future. My hope is that disgraceful fans never come to a game again.

Imagine your world without mail
Canada Post effectively 鈥榖ankrupt,鈥 federal mediator says in report pushing for weekend delivery,听May 16
Mediator William Kaplan has recommended that Canada Post eliminate daily mail delivery except for businesses.听How will the average person get their mail? How will bills get delivered? If we go to weekly delivery, then only 20 per cent of mail deliverers will be needed. Will the price of postage stamps also be reduced? Daily mail delivery is a historical requirement in our society as not everyone is familiar with electronic communication. Elimination of daily mail delivery is an absolutely outrageous and absurd idea.

Bill 5 undermines solar and wind power
The Ford government continues to show its true colours when it comes to our future energy path by shunning renewable energy in favour of more expensive and polluting fossil fuels.听
Ontario has not contracted for a single kilowatt-hour of new wind and solar electricity during the last seven years while use of solar, in particular, has skyrocketed in much of the rest of the world. Meanwhile, Ontario is planning to increase its gas-powered energy production from four per cent in 2017 to 25 per cent by 2030, accompanied by an almost 600 per cent increase in greenhouse gas emissions.听
Now the Ontario government, with its proposed Bill 5,听, is amending the to give itself the right to prohibit the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) from procuring any good or service originating from any country, region or territory which the Ontario government chooses to ban. While Bill 5 doesn鈥檛 list any specific countries, as announced on Feb 10, 2025, on the Ontario Progressive Conservative website (Ontario PC), Ford鈥檚 plan is to 鈥.鈥澨
Currently, China makes the majority of the world鈥檚 solar panels (more than 80 per cent), wind turbines (around 60 per cent), and renewable energy control systems.
Since the Ontario government cancelled more than 700 wind and solar energy projects in 2018 鈥 at a cost to the taxpayers of $230 million 鈥 it has consistently shown little interest in promoting the growth of local clean energy technology.听
If Bill 5 is enacted and the government bans the use of China鈥檚 goods and services in Ontario鈥檚 energy infrastructure, this will likely end the expansion of solar power installation in Ontario. This will only increase our dependency on climate-damaging fossil gas and deprive Ontarians of access to the cleanest and most affordable energy sources.听
As members of 海角社区官网East Residents for Renewable Energy (TERRE), a local community group advocating for a phaseout of the polluting Port Lands gas plant by 2030, we oppose the Ford government鈥檚 Bill 5 and the roadblocks it will create for a rapid, just transition to renewable energy in 海角社区官网and across Ontario. We call on our government to lead the way in making this transition a reality.
