I love visiting the U.S. 鈥 from the San Diego tacos, to the black sand beaches in Hawaii 鈥 but I’m sure as heck not going there in the next four years

Last year, this time, I was in sunny San Diego. It was a golf trip for my husband and a few days of relaxing for me. We went to Balboa Park, Old Town, Coronado and the Gaslamp District. I can say we ate entirely too many tacos and burritos. The Mexican food scene is great.
In February 2024, I was in Washington, D.C. on an experiential learning trip with Black students from the University of 海角社区官网Scarborough. We visited Howard University, a historically Black institution and the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
I鈥檝e visited Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Hawaii鈥檚 Big Island, Indianapolis, New York City, Hartford, Miami鈥檚 South Beach, Orlando鈥檚 Disney World 鈥 not to mention quick hops over the border to go shopping in Buffalo, Plattsburgh, or Erie. From seeing the Martin Luther King, Jr. monument in Washington and Times Square in Manhattan, to walking across black sand beaches in Hawaii, there鈥檚 a lot to see and do.
Too bad that ain鈥檛 happening for at least the next four years.
I鈥檓 celebrating a milestone birthday this summer. I started planning last year before the 2024 U.S. election. I thought about doing a girls鈥 trip to Las Vegas 鈥 maybe we would go to some shows and restaurants and just see the sights. I also thought about going on a short cruise out of Fort Lauderdale to celebrate on the high seas with my friends and family.
I was about to contact a travel agent when Trump won the election and I realized that I wanted nothing to do with the United States of America.
Some folks laughed and said I was suffering from .
But I bumped into a friend of mine who lives in States and she said, 鈥渨ith what you鈥檝e written about Trump? You better stay out of the States.鈥
And Canadians across the country 鈥 and people from countries around the globe 鈥 are saying the same thing: you better stay out of the States.
The 聽(WTTC) reported that 鈥渋nternational visitor spending to the U.S. is projected to fall to just under $169 billion this year, down from $181 billion in 2024. The loss won鈥檛 be felt by Travel & Tourism alone, with WTTC saying it represents a direct blow to the U.S. economy overall, impacting communities, jobs, and businesses from coast to coast.鈥
Last week, I was listening to CBC reporting on American store owners on the U.S.-Canadian border. Business is down 鈥 worse than during the COVID-19 pandemic 鈥 because Canadians aren鈥檛 coming across the border. The sentiment of a lot of Americans who were interviewed was, 鈥渄on鈥檛 be mad at us! This is not our fault!鈥

OK, but who is to blame? This is the administration that was elected by the citizenry. Americans may not like the milk, but they surely bought the cow.
Things aren鈥檛 looking good for tourism in the U.S. According to the (LVCVA), in March 鈥渧isitor volume鈥 was down by 7.8 per cent from the same period in 2024. The LVCVA cites 鈥渃ooling feelings鈥 about the U.S. from Canadians and Mexicans, who make up half of the international tourists to Sin City. Other reasons for the drop are Americans who are nervous about the economy and spending thanks to Trump鈥檚 nonsensical tariffs.
There are still some people who are venturing into the States because they already paid for trips, or they want to visit their families.
But I鈥檒l be celebrating my birthday far away from the United States of America. And, whether it鈥檚 out of protest, self-protection, or just plain fatigue, more of us are not interested in the dramatics of Trump鈥檚 America.
The tacos are delicious. The shopping is good. But there鈥檚 nothing relaxing about crossing a border into a country where the politics are exhausting and you don鈥檛 feel welcome.
We鈥檒l find our joy elsewhere.
And take our tourist dollars with us.
