SNL jokes about Donald Trump helping Mark Carney win federal election in cold open
The comedy show has been poking fun at the relationship between Canada and the United States, particularly after Trump鈥檚 rhetoric about Canada becoming the 51st state.
Saturday Night Live聽is back after a three week hiatus and still poking fun at U.S. President Donald Trump’s effect on Canadian politics.
During last night’s cold open, cast member聽James Austin Johnson addressed the camera as a parodic Trump recounting his first 100 days in office.
“People are saying that what I’ve done so far has single-handedly helped win聽people elections,聽most in Canada,” he said.

Liberal leader Mark Carney was elected Prime Minister on Monday, beating Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre with a minority mandate.
The episode featured “Abbott Elementary” star and creator Quinta Brunson as host and singer-songwriter Benson Boone as musical guest.
The comedy show has been poking fun at the relationship between Canada and the United States, particularly after Trump鈥檚 rhetoric about annexing Canada to make the 51st state.
During the show’s previous cold open, Johnson portrayed Trump poking fun at phone calls between Carney and Trump, with a slew of other tariff-related jokes during the show.
In the March 1 episode, comedian and Scarborough-native Mike Myers wore a 鈥淐anada is not for sale鈥 T-shirt during the show鈥檚 closing scene. As the credits rolled he mouthed the words 鈥渆lbows up鈥 as he pointed to his bent elbow and moved it into the air.
Myers, who is famously a hockey fan, was likely referring to when players keeping their elbows up as a defensive move. Since then it has become a popular, patriotic phrase to signify Canada taking a stance against tariffs and annexation threats.
A week later, Myers showed off a 海角社区官网Maple Leafs shirt during the closing scene and once again mouthed 鈥渆lbows up鈥 while pointing to his bent elbow and moving it in the air. During the April 5 episode, Myers wore a Canadian Tire shirt at the end of the show.
