鈥淵ou know, the Yankees, they鈥檙e not a good team. I don鈥檛 care what their record is,鈥 , who was in the booth alongside play-by-play announcer Dan Shulman at Rogers Centre.
鈥淭hey have a lot of wild pitches, they make a lot of mistakes in the field, they don鈥檛 run the bases very well. If they don鈥檛 hit home runs, they don鈥檛 have a chance to win.鈥

Jays fans were irked last July when Kay said 海角社区官网was 鈥渘ot playing great baseball鈥 and 鈥渘ot a first-place team,鈥 pointing out that the Yankees鈥 run differential at the time was +105 while the Blue Jays were just at +4 after being in the negative for most of the season to that point.
That began a war of words, with Jays fans feeling slighted. After 海角社区官网completed a four-game sweep of New York to take first in the AL East, Sportsnet broadcaster Jamie Campbell waved a broom on the network’s post-game show, saying, 鈥淚 can think of a certain Yankee broadcaster, in fact, who is gonna have to go on his show tomorrow and admit that the Blue Jays are a first-place team, because the standings prove it.鈥

Kay responded: 鈥淲hat I would say to Jamie is I can easily say the Blue Jays are a first-place team because I鈥檓 not a fawning fanboy. I鈥檓 a broadcaster.聽Imagine if (YES Network studio analyst) Jack Curry was waving a broom on the Yankees post-game show, he would probably be called into the office and shortly fired after that.”
The two later appeared to settle their differences on X.
“I should point out that I have always had great respect for Mr. Kay,” Campbell tweeted. “That鈥檚 a tough market, and he鈥檚 endured. We haven鈥檛 been able to say 鈥渇irst place鈥 around here for a while. Just having a little fun!

海角社区官网remains in first place at 83-61, three games ahead of the 80-64 Yankees.
Kay later clarified to the Star鈥檚 Mike Wilner that he was actually trying to compliment the Jays for playing better than their run differential. He didn鈥檛 mean to belittle their success.
鈥淚 think I might have said they鈥檙e not playing that great because I was looking at the numbers and I probably didn鈥檛 articulate it the way I should have,鈥 Kay said back then. 鈥淭hey were playing better than you would think they were playing when you looked at their numbers.鈥
Both teams are back in action Wednesday, with 海角社区官网resuming a three-game series against Houston and the Yankees looking to bounce back in their series against Detroit.
