Thank you to the Star’s Ben Spurr for this enlightened article.
Why is our landfill called ‘Green Lane’ landfill? It sounds like green washing to me. I am so tired of all the green washing talk, net zero goals, waste meeting consultations, compromising solutions and endless expensive consulting studies.
Now is the time for the city of º£½ÇÉçÇø¹ÙÍøto address the urgency of the situation.
The goal is to divert as much waste from landfill, not to create more landfill. The Netherlands banned landfill from public use in the 1990s and adapted the waste to energy incinerators.
Instead of investing in landfills as the cheapest option we should be investing in infrastructure and enlightened policies to divert our waste. Waste has material value. Imagine making more more money, creating new jobs and industries by repurposing and reimagining new uses for our waste.
The city of º£½ÇÉçÇø¹ÙÍøhas to imagine how we solve our waste issue without landfill. We should build on our success of the organic diversion program.
We need innovative solutions now.
We can do it if we become bold in our thinking and actions.

Not acting now on crisis is a garbage response
More than half of the bulk of my garbage is packaging. I try to recycle what I can, but I have watched from my balcony as the garbage collectors dump recycling in with the other stuff.
The city can’t do anything about the bulky packaging seniors may find difficult to open, but federal regulations could.
It’s shocking the Oneida First Nation has had to live with Toronto’ garbage for so long.
I hope a better solution can be found.

Toronto’s garbage crisis at critical levels. It’s time to fix the problem
The GTA is in a dangerous and precarious situation with respect to our garbage. The recycling situation has become a joke. As an example, go into any coffee shop in the GTA and you will usually find just one receptacle for all the waste. If there is more than one receptacle, most people place their items in whichever receptacle is most convenient or where there is space.
The garbage situation is becoming a crisis and, of course, no one wants our garbage.
I weep for the environment that future generations will inherit.

It’s not about right or left. It’s about humanity
The suspect in the Charlie Kirk case is being declared a ‘leftist’ as though that explains the killing. I am a 71-year old progressive Christian who proudly considers herself a leftist. I believe in helping the poor and the oppressed and building a world that meets the needs of all people and all living things.
I would never dream of killing someone because I abhor their political views.
That being said, I can criticize the views of someone like Charlie Kirk without supporting his murder. It is high time we stop dividing the world into left and right and start to see one another as people.
After all, we are all made in God’s image.

Federal government’s new disability benefit has some issues
I have to say, the federal Liberal government has set a new low for launching a benefit program.
If you don’t qualify for the Disability Tax Credit then you will not receive the Canada Disability Benefit. Two of the reasons why people living with a disability, like myself, will not get this so-called benefit are outrageous.
First, if the applicant does not get a medical form signed by their doctor confirming their medical condition when they file for the tax credit, they will have their application for the disability declined. This explains why many people like myself have yet to receive a single cent from this benefit, launched this June.
The other disqualifier for this tax credit is any outstanding tax debt owed to the federal government. This is outrageous, because a person who has a student debt or owes taxes still receives the $10 a day childcare benefit.

If Canada is to move forward, there’s no room for divisive politics
We see much in the news about what Prime Minister Mark Carney has to do to fulfill his electoral promises. But the thing is, he can’t do it alone.
As individuals, we sit back and wait for something to happen. But it is our responsibility to help make it happen.
The opposition seems to think their role is to show how the government is failing. The role of the opposition is to help foster positive moves and not just simply oppose everything.
Let’s all get together and try to make the nation-building ideas work, for all Canadians.

Clean energy is the future. Canada needs to wake up
On climate action Canada waffles and the U.S. drops out while the rest of the world surges ahead to a future of clean, sustainable energy.
Denmark leads the way, with more than half of its energy derived from wind and solar. The European Union plans to be carbon neutral by 2050. Fossil capitalists want to keep producing dirty oil and gas long enough to make a profit, but they will end up with oil on their hands.
The sun and wind are free and will never become stranded assets.
Prime Minister Mark Carney would do well to get with the program of supporting advances in clean energy and battery storage.

Vaughan politicians take the easy way out
‘A knee-jerk reaction’: Vaughan city council votes to cancel speed camera program, Sept. 15
Once again, politicians have made a decision based on their popularity as opposed to the safety of their constituents.
Those opposing speed cameras must think they are better than the law. But seriously, if you speed, you pay. Eventually you should understand that concept. Financially, speed cameras far outshine hiring police constables specifically to sit in these lower speed zones. And who would really want such a job anyway?
I got a ticket from a speed camera once. Key word, once. Just slow down.
