鈥淥ntario鈥檚 minimum wage remains one of the highest in the country. Now more than ever, workers and businesses need fair, balanced and predictable wages.鈥
However, the new minimum wage that will take effect in October is still below the聽聽by the Ontario Living Wage Network.
The federal minimum wage in Canada was raised to $17.75 per hour on April 1, a 2.4 per cent increase. The increase applies to federally regulated private sectors.
How much more could a minimum wage worker make with the minimum wage increase?
According to the province, a worker making the general minimum wage and working 40 hours per week will see an annual pay increase of up to $835 as a result of these changes.
This annualized wage increase is based on the Ontario Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 2.4 per cent and will bring Ontario鈥檚 minimum wage to the second-highest provincial rate in Canada, the province noted.
Under the Employment Standards Act, Ontario鈥檚 minimum wage increases annually based on the Ontario CPI, a measure of inflation which represents changes in prices experienced by Ontario consumers.
