鈥業鈥檝e given up everything.鈥 Explosive growth in international students comes at a steep cost

As Canada welcomes its biggest cohort of international students ever, it鈥檚 proving especially lucrative for Ontario colleges, but also creating a host of new challenges.

Hyungee Bae, 28, started at Centennial College鈥檚 aviation technician-aircraft maintenance program in September. The international student from South Korea is paying $20,400 for her first-year tuition and hopes to get a job and ultimately stay in Canada.


Hyungee Bae is putting it all on the line 鈥 every ounce of energy and every cent 鈥 to study at Centennial College鈥檚 state-of-the-art aerospace and aviation campus. She鈥檚 banking on it landing her a job in Canada and, hopefully, one day, citizenship.

鈥淢y parents say, 鈥業 don鈥檛 know if you鈥檙e brave or a fool,鈥 because I鈥檝e given up everything,鈥 says Bae, 28, who left South Korea where she taught English and lived in the comfort of her parents鈥 home.
