At least one LRT in 海角社区官网is gearing up to open soon.
The Finch West LRT is expected to begin a 30-day revenue demonstration test on Saturday, marking the final round of testing before the LRT line opens to the public. However, there is still no official opening date for the line.
During the revenue service demonstration test, trains will operate on the line for at least 30 days as they are expected to when it opens to the paying public. Finch West is expected to run 15 trains every five minutes聽, and every seven to 10 minutes during off-peak hours.聽
The date for testing was published in a TTC memo sent to staff that was leaked to social media. A source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak, confirmed to the Star the authenticity of the memo.
Metrolinx declined to confirm the date of testing, but did say in a statement that the revenue service demonstration would begin “in the coming days.”
“As our CEO Michael Lindsay has said publicly, our goal is to open our LRT projects as quickly as possible once they are safe and reliable to do so,” spokesperson Andrea Ernesaks said in a statement.
By starting its revenue service demonstration, the Finch West LRT has surpassed the Eglinton Crosstown‘s progress.
Train control for the Finch West LRT was transferred to the TTC’s Hillcrest facility last week, a milestone the Crosstown hit back in June, but the latter has yet to begin revenue-service testing as cars on the line continue to encounter reliability issues.聽
The Finch West LRT “is a little bit more simplified than Eglinton 鈥 It essentially runs in a dedicated right of way, the signalling technology is proven, the vehicles are a little more simpler,” Metrolinx CEO Michael Lindsay said at a press conference on Sept. 5.
鈥淲e haven鈥檛 seen some of the same sort of maintenance and reliability things to fix on Finch that we did on Eglinton.”
Metrolinx and the Ontario government have not given an opening date for the Finch West LRT since it failed to open in 2024.
Documents obtained by the Star show the opening process for the Eglinton Crosstown that was presented to the TTC board in June. The opening plan for the Finch West LRT is expected to follow a similar path.聽
In the plans for the Crosstown, after the 30-day revenue test, the line would need to be certified as having reached 鈥渟ubstantial completion.鈥 After that, the entirety of the line would be handed over to the TTC for operation. The TTC would conduct a further round of testing before opening, according to the documents.
The 18-stop LRT line will run from Finch West station in the east to Humber College in the west. Construction on it began in 2018, and it聽was originally slated to open in 2021, but several delays have hampered the line’s opening, including vehicle delivery delays, the pandemic and a lawsuit.
