The commission says it believes Driechel has a firm focus on reducing crime, improving public safety and strengthening the relationship with the community.

Driechel began his policing career in 1997.

He was in the spotlight earlier this month after a letter from the force sent in his name publicly called out Crown prosecutors for agreeing to accept a guilty plea in a high-profile case surrounding the death of a young girl.

Criminal trial lawyers have called the letter a violation of the firewall that traditionally separates the investigative work done by police and the court decisions made by prosecutors.
