“I’ve been very busy this year. Every year is going to be different,” says owner and chef Masaki Saito when asked about how he felt about losing a Michelin star. “It’s OK. Check back with me in 2026.” Earlier this month, a documentary on Saito’s life and culinary talent, ”,” had its world premiere at TIFF. 

Instead, another restaurant received the night’s top honours. in Jordan Station, Ont., which also received top billing on this year’s Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants list, was the only restaurant to receive two stars this year. The Niagara region 42-acre farm, winery, restaurant and bakery won over critics for their seasonal menus and reliance on local ingredients, much of it grown on its property.

“We’re pleasantly surprised,” said Daniel Hadida, who co-owns Restaurant Pearl Morissette with Eric Robertson. “You do the work and make people happy. The rest is extra. I feel excited that a business like ours, that focuses on provenance in Canada, is being recognized. The support and growth of the team at the restaurant is the primary reason for our success. Both of us are here tonight, but the restaurant is still open and the team is working their butts off.”

This year’s list had one new restaurant that earned one Michelin star, , in which its chef Eric Chong also won an award for best Young Chef, as well as a mention on Michelin’s Recommended list for his other restaurant, R&D.

The Bib Gourmand award, a distinction for restaurants that the Michelin Guide deemed to be a more affordable option, has six new entries this year: in Oakville; in Dundas, Ont.; in Bloorcourt; in Leslieville; in Uxbridge and in Kensington Market.

The Michelin Guide’s Recommended list also has six new entries: on the Roncesvalles strip; on the Ossington strip; in North York; in Kitchener; in Yorkville; and in Old Toronto.
