People post videos of their faces and ask their followers, or an AI filter: “How old do I look?†It’s an interactive strategy designed to provoke responses, and they’re flooded with them.


Love it, hate it or want to sue it for ruining our youth, the trends of TikTok reveal so much about our communal preoccupations. Case in point: our obsession with looking youthful, exemplified in the How old do I look? trend. It’s like the carnival age guessers of yore have come back as a crowdsourced phenom with purpose-built filters.

So far, so much fun, right? But it’s worth taking a longer look at the fleeting fads of social media, particularly where our appearance is concerned. Perceptions of age and beauty have real-life repercussions, affecting how we feel about ourselves, how we interact socially and professionally, even how much money we make.
