Ryanair Holdings Plc Chief Executive Officer Michael O鈥橪eary is bracing for airspace incursions like the drone barrage that disrupted Polish flights on Wednesday to continue.聽
鈥淭his is going to be an ongoing issue for all airlines for the next number of years,鈥 O鈥橪eary said Thursday at the Irish carrier鈥檚 annual general meeting in Dublin. He said Europe needs a strong response to what he called 鈥淩ussian prodding.鈥
O鈥橪eary praised the prompt response of Polish aviation officials and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency after Russian drones overflew Ukraine and were shot down over Poland. He said the incident was a 鈥渨ake-up call for Europe and NATO鈥 and reduced the budget airline鈥檚 on-time performance to 60%, as air traffic disruptions spilled over into Scandinavia, the Baltic states, and Germany.

鈥淭his kind of irritant, Russia poking the bear, Russia irritating Europe, Russia playing games with Europe, will continue,鈥 O鈥橪eary said. 鈥淲e don鈥檛 see it as a safety issue, but it鈥檚 certainly a disruption issue.鈥
Poland sought NATO consultations after shooting down drones that crossed into its territory early on Wednesday during a massive Russian air strike on Ukraine, calling the incursion an 鈥渁ct of aggression.鈥
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the airspace violation amounted to an intentional provocation from Moscow, forcing the NATO and European Union member state to close its airspace and order citizens in the eastern part of the country to stay indoors.
The incident led to air traffic backups across Europe, O鈥橪eary said. He said he鈥檚 also seeing drone activity in the Baltic states.聽
鈥淲e expect more disruptions, unless the EU and the White House take some firm stake, particularly in the form of sanctions, penal sanctions, on Russia,鈥 O鈥橪eary said.
At the meeting, O鈥橪eary told shareholders that summer demand was strong this year, and the airline will become debt-free after paying off two issues 鈥 one for 鈧850 million ($993 million) next week and another for 鈧1.2 billion in May.
