MIAMI (AP) 鈥 Detroit Tigers star left-hander Tarik Skubal will undergo tests after he left the club鈥檚 8-2 loss to the Miami Marlins in the fourth inning Friday night after experiencing tightness in his left side.
The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner 鈥 and favorite to repeat this year 鈥 allowed a leadoff single to Heriberto Hern谩ndez and then retired Eric Wagaman on a flyout to center field when he exited.
鈥淭here are some aches and pains that come and go when you鈥檙e out there playing. This one was new to me,鈥 Skubal said. 鈥淎nd that鈥檚 kind of what made my decision for me.鈥

Skubal immediately motioned to manager A.J. Hinch and a Tigers training staff member.
鈥淲e have to get him looked at,鈥 Hinch said. 鈥淲e hope for the best.鈥
The AL Central-leading Tigers are 7 1/2 games ahead of second-place Cleveland.
鈥淎t this time of year and what we鈥檝e got going forward, I really didn鈥檛鈥 want to risk doing something that caused me to really miss some time,鈥 Skubal said.
Skubal said he doesn鈥檛 know if he will undergo the tests during the remainder of the Tigers鈥 stay in Miami or return to Detroit.
鈥淚 understand there is some sort of concern but at the same time I鈥檝e seen our trainer do a lot of physical stuff,鈥 Skubal said. 鈥淚n that aspect, I鈥檓 optimistic. We鈥檒l get more information, get some imaging on it and see what鈥檚 there just to calm the brain down, too.
鈥淗opefully, there鈥檚 nothing there and we stop talking about this as soon as possible.鈥
After a recent stretch of dominant outings, Skubal struggled Friday, giving up four runs and four hits. Rookie Agust铆n Ramirez and Hern谩ndez hit solo homers off Skubal.

鈥淚t’s frustrating to me as a starting pitcher,鈥 Skubal said. 鈥淚 put our team in a bad spot not only today but for the rest of the series with a lot of guys that had to throw that shouldn’t.鈥
Skubal had allowed one earned run over his previous 27 1/3 innings and had thrown seven scoreless innings in each of his last two starts.
Tigers shortstop Javier B谩ez also left early, when he fouled off a pitch that struck near his left eye in the second inning. A Tigers spokesman said B谩ez cleared concussion protocol and is listed as day-to-day.
