Public health officials in York region are warning about a measles exposure at a North York store and Vaughan hospital after another case was confirmed in Thornhill earlier this week.Â
It’s the fifth case linked to the ongoing outbreak declared on Sept. 4, York Region Public Health (YRPH) said in a on Thursday.Â
People may have been exposed if they visited either Kids Club Toronto at 3377 Bathurst Street in North York on Sept. 12 between 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., or the Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital emergency room on Sept. 15 or 16 between 8:30 p.m. on the 15th until 12:35 a.m. on the 16th.Â

Anyone who believes they may have been exposed at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital should confirm they have two doses of the measles vaccine, fill out a followup survey online, monitor for symptoms, and call YRPH immediately if they develop any.Â
The Sept. 4 outbreak began at a Thornhill convenience store with four cases, and was unrelated to a separate outbreak in Southwestern Ontario. The outbreak in question started at near Bathurst Street and Clark Avenue in Vaughan.
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that spreads through airborne transmission, according to a news release from YRPH. The virus can live in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours. Children under one year old, pregnant people, or those with weakened immune systems are at increased risk of severe complications, including brain inflammation and death.
Symptoms start seven to 21 days after exposure and can include high fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes, or a red rash that usually starts on the head and neck and spreads down to the chest, arms, and legs. The rash is typically not itchy and appears three to seven days after other symptoms start.
The YRPH is also advising those in the general public to ensure they are fully vaccinated with two doses of the measles vaccine. Appointments for vaccination can be .
