The attack took place just after midnight on July 2 at a Pizza Pizza on Wentworth Street West. Police reported that several people tried to jump behind the counter to take an item when the woman, who owns the store, confronted them. Several people then “swarmed and assaulted” her, a police press release said.

Two other teenage girls 鈥� 13 and 14 鈥� were arrested in July. Both were charged with assault causing bodily harm.

An 11-year-old boy was also identified but could not be charged under the Youth Criminal Justice Act because of his age. Youth must be 12 or older to be charged criminally.

The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) earlier told the Star that the believed the attack was motivated by hate, saying the woman’s hijab was ripped off and she was stomped on. Members of the woman’s family, in a press conference organized by the NCCM the day following the attack, decried ongoing discrimination they said they were experiencing at their business.

Durham police have said they do not believe this was a hate-motivated crime.

鈥淭here is no evidence to indicate that hate was an aggravating factor in this assault,鈥� police said in an earlier press release.
