A 40-year-old man was arrested on the Mountain by police Friday night, hours after three people were injured in a stabbing at the Hamilton Downtown Mosque.
Police said in a news release Saturday morning, 鈥渆arly details鈥 of their investigation suggest the incident 鈥渨as not hate-motivated鈥 and 鈥渢he suspects and victims鈥 knew each other.
The stabbing was reported just after 2 p.m., Friday, moments after completion of afternoon prayers at the mosque.
Police say a verbal altercation preceded the stabbing, which is not believed to be hate-related.
Police told the Spectator an argument started outside the mosque, then continued inside where the stabbing took place.
鈥淭wo suspects fled the area in an unknown direction,鈥 police said. 鈥淭here are conflicting reports whether it was one or two separate vehicles.鈥
In an update Saturday morning, police said their investigation culminated in the arrest at 鈥渁n address鈥 on the Mountain. The man was charged with one count of aggravated assault and two counts of assault causing bodily harm.听
One person was taken to hospital with 鈥渘on-life-threatening injuries鈥 while a second was treated at the mosque; a third person later checked-in at hospital with injuries as well.
Police did not indicate if the suspects in the attack were present at the mosque for prayers.
