Sanjeet Takhar is a nurturer: of people, places and culture. During her seven-year tenure as one of Toronto鈥檚 premiere dance-party producers, Takhar built her reputation on making sure each event was welcoming and inclusive.
Now, Takhar is bringing her vision to the , the famed experimental music venue on Bathurst Street, north of Bloor. In its 40 years, the venue has had many lives: concert hall, recording studio, home base for an in-house label that released collections of Iroquois and Inuit music.
鈥淢usic is revolutionary,鈥 says Takhar, who believes that music can help people become more empathetic. To that end, she鈥檒l focus on raising up BIPOC and LGBTQ artists. She also plans to use music to build strong community connections by adding more context to the art being presented, teaching the stories behind the culture being featured and uplifting other community organizations that don鈥檛 have the same access to resources.

鈥淲e鈥檙e thinking about all the ways that we could support marginalized people,鈥 says Takhar. She鈥檚 considering the audience too. 鈥淗ow can we grow them and make them more politically mindful?鈥
For her, people are at the heart of everything she does. 鈥淚f we鈥檙e not building with people in mind, we鈥檙e not building together.鈥
