This week’s non-fiction bestsellers lists feature books about people who are no longer with us and one institution that is tenuously holding on to life.Ìý
With the death of Pope Francis on April 21 and his funeral this past weekend, the pontiff’s autobiography, “Hope,” returned to the original non-fiction list at No. 2. It was the first memoir ever published by a sitting pope when it came out in January.
At No. 8 on the original non-fiction list sits a posthumous book by Joan Didion, who died in 2021. “Notes to John” is a compilation of journal entries that Didion wrote for her husband, John Gregory Dunne (who predeceased her in 2003), about the psychiatric sessions she began in 1999.
And with the fate of Canada’s storied Hudson’s Bay up in the air, “The Company: The Rise and Fall of the Hudson’s Bay Empire” by Stephen Bown was back on the Canadian non-fiction list at No. 9.Ìý
Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, a Canadian Indigenous author and musician, entered both the original non-fiction and Canadian fiction lists, at No. 7 and 4 respectively, with “Theory of Water,” in which she traces the cultural and historical interactions of Indigenous people with water and reimagines water as a catalyst for transformation, according to Penguin Random House Canada.
