The life-changing question聽Kyle Lowry聽will face one day is when to retire. And when the man considered the greatest Raptor聽steps聽away, the question for others is whether he joins the immortals in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
In the franchise’s 30 years’ existence, five players who played for the Raptors have been inducted into the hall in Springfield, Mass.: Hakeem Olajuwon (2008), Tracy McGrady (2017), Chris Bosh聽(2021), and聽Chauncey Billups and Vince Carter聽(earlier this month).
Lowry, in town Friday with the Philadelphia 76ers in his 19th聽season in the league, could be next.聽
Lowry鈥檚 career numbers heading into this season (14.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game in 1,138 games) may not scream 鈥渇irst ballot.鈥 But they are comparable to those of Hall of Fame point guards like Billups (15.2 points, 2.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists in 1,043 games) and Tony Parker (15.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 5.6 assists in 1,254 games).
Lowry is a six-time NBA all-star with one championship, Billups is a five-time all-star (one title and Finals MVP) and Tony Parker is a six-time all-star (four titles and Finals MVP).
聽gives Lowry an 85.7 per cent probability of making the Hall, ahead of contemporaries like Draymond Green (76.8 per cent), Jimmy Butler (72.9 per cent) and Klay Thompson (70.2 per cent). It had pegged Billups at 84.4 per cent.
The respected basketball stats site came up with a complicated model that predicts a聽 to make the Hall of Fame based on variables such as the number of NBA championships won, all-star selections, stats, NBA win shares and even their height.
A player becomes eligible for Hall of Fame enshrinement聽four years after retirement.聽
Every eligible player ranked ahead of Lowry on the Basketball Reference probability list has been enshrined except Larry Foust (94.2 per cent), who played in the 1950s. Carmelo Anthony (98.4) and Dwight Howard (99.7) have yet to hit the four-year retirement eligibility threshold.
DeMar DeRozan matches Lowry in all-star selections with six, yet only has a 46.3 per cent chance of making the Hall, according to the Basketball Reference model. But DeRozan is also three years younger than 38-year-old Lowry, so he can continue to build his case. Former teammate Kawhi Leonard‘s chances are pegged at 91.3 per cent.
A committee of 24 members made up from Hall of Famers, basketball executives, media and other experts cast their votes to determine who gets elected to Springfield. A candidate must receive at least 18 votes to earn the nod into the hall. If they聽miss the cut for five consecutive years, their nomination gets suspended for five years before their name聽can be reintroduced.
鈥淲e believe that when Kyle Lowry’s career is over that he will be recognized as the face of the (Raptors) franchise, surpassing Vince Carter and Chris Bosh,鈥 said Joe Spagnolo, executive director of The Hoop Historians, a U.S.-based group comprised of聽basketball coaches and officials.
Like Carter and Bosh, Lowry enjoyed a stretch of all-star success in a Raptors uniform, a time frame when he was one of the best players in the league and 鈥渁 desirable teammate,鈥 Spagnolo said.
But he mostly made his mark in the post-season, where he was 鈥渁 clutch performer鈥 during the聽2019 run to the NBA title. He’s also an Olympic gold medallist and he didn’t have to dominate the stat sheet to show he was a star, Spagnolo said.
Community involvement, charity efforts and how a player represents themselves and the NBA in society are also some of the aspects that carry significant weight in the Hall of Fame process.
Aside from the numbers and accolades, making the Hall can come down to which players happen to be in the same selection class. Spagnolo said Lowry might need to wait through a few years of voting, but his overall resum茅 can compete against any other guard of his era.
鈥淧ound for pound, he can match any of his contemporaries, both on the court and in the ballot box,” Spagnolo said. “If we had a vote for entry to the Basketball聽Hall of Fame, we would cast a vote for Kyle Lowry.”
