OTTAWA 鈥 Mark Carney apologized Monday after Liberal campaign staff members produced and covertly distributed Donald Trump-themed buttons at a conservative conference in Ottawa last week.
贵辞濒濒辞飞颈苍驳听, the Liberal party admitted Sunday that campaign staff made buttons that said 鈥淪top the Steal鈥 and left them on a table at the Canada Strong and Free Network Conference.
“Stop the Steal” was a slogan used by U.S. President Donald Trump and his supporters to falsely claim that Trump had won the 2020 presidential election.听
Other buttons planted at the conference showed Conservative party campaign manager Jenni Byrne’s name crossed out and replaced with Kory Teneycke’s.
Teneycke, who ran three successful election campaigns for Doug Ford鈥檚 Progressive Conservative party in Ontario, has been publicly critical of this year’s federal Conservative campaign.
Speaking in Dorval, Que. on Monday morning, Carney apologized for the incident.
鈥淚 was unaware of this behaviour, but on behalf of my campaign I apologize for it unreservedly. I made it absolutely clear to my campaign that this behaviour, or anything approximating it or in that spirit, is unacceptable and cannot happen again,鈥 the Liberal leader said. 鈥淭he responsible people for this issue have been reassigned within the campaign.鈥

A Liberal party spokesperson said Sunday that the buttons were created after campaign staff members had been talking about conservative infighting and got “carried away.”听
The Canada Strong and Free Network holds an annual听conference for conservative-leaning politicians. This year’s event included addresses by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and former U.S. trade representative Robert Lighthizer.
Conservative were quick to denounce the Liberals, with Conservative candidate Raquel Dancho among those who accused the Liberals of engaging in U.S.-style politics.听
鈥淚 never want to hear another Liberal talk about 鈥榯he dangers of disinformation鈥 in our politics,鈥澨鼶ancho posted on听social media. 鈥淭his is the textbook definition of disinformation, and planting lies about an opposing party鈥檚 position can never, ever be tolerated.鈥
