Opinion | Does the TDSB have the courage to do what is right with specialty schools?

2 min read

鈥淭DSB data has shown that even though Black students comprise over 12 per cent of the general student population, they represent only 3 per cent of students admitted to arts schools. While white students comprise 28 per cent of the student population, they represent 73 per cent of art school students,鈥 writes Sachin Maharaj.

The 海角社区官网District School Board鈥檚 (TDSB) proposal to change the admissions process to its specialized schools has raised the ire of some parents who fear that, in the quest to make these schools more equitable, the board will ruin them in the process. Between now and when the proposal is submitted for board approval, we can expect intense lobbying in order to maintain the status quo. Will TDSB trustees be able to withstand the pressure?

The existence of elite schools in a publicly funded education system committed to equity has always been somewhat of a contradiction. While the TDSB purports to be committed to the principles of inclusion, we should be clear that a large part of what gives specialized programs their prestige is their exclusive nature (i.e., only some kids can attend).
