A 海角社区官网councillor wants the city to pause its use of automated speed cameras, calling them 鈥渟peed traps鈥 that don鈥檛 actually slow speeders.
Coun.聽Anthony Perruzza (Ward 7, Humber River-Black Creek) plans to introduce a motion at council on Thursday asking the city to stop ticketing with the 150听肠补尘别谤补蝉 located throughout the city until it can prove it鈥檚 giving enough warning before they install the devices 鈥 and that the cameras aren鈥檛 ticketing 鈥渃onscientious鈥 drivers.
Perruzza’s motion will be one of two on speed cameras before council.聽Mayor Olivia Chow is also expected to introduce a motion recommending to install聽“larger, more visible, and clearer signage” where speed cameras are put up.
After an hour of bickering, council voted to look into limiting the number of tickets a driver can be issued before receiving an infraction notice.

“They’re just popping out without a lot of fanfare,” said Perruzza. “There’s a lot of things here we need to take a look at: markings, visibility, letting people know where the cameras are.”
According to provincial requirements, warning signs are supposed to go up at least 90 days in advance of the cameras being installed at any new location 鈥 as has been done since they were first .
Perruzza’s motion is expected to ask the city’s transportation staff to look at measures to slow drivers with increased signage, pavement markings and issuing warnings before ticketing. The around the speed camera system and signage since it falls under the Highway Traffic Act.
Perruzza said he also wants the city to ensure its program meets its safety goals without “unfairly targeting conscientious drivers” travelling “close” to the posted speed limits.
“These cameras are becoming speed traps that have no meaningful impact on slowing down communities,” said Perruzza.
A city spokesperson said Wednesday the municipality could not divulge what speed over the posted limit the cameras issue tickets to drivers, “as it would compromise the investigative techniques and procedures used in law enforcement.”
Chow’s motion is also expected to look at limiting the number of tickets an individual car owner can get from a new camera for a certain period of time before receiving their first infraction in the mail. It’s unclear if speed cameras can be programmed to do that.聽

Automated safety enforcement听肠补尘别谤补蝉 have been a hot-button issue since they were introduced in 海角社区官网in 2020. Since then, 25 speed cameras have had to be replaced for reasons other than wear and tear or weather 鈥 in other words, because of vandalism, collisions, sabotage or graffiti, according to data the Star obtained through a freedom of information request.
Parkside Drive, which has generated聽more than $7 million alone in the three years it’s been up,聽was聽cut down five times in the last seven months聽鈥 and聽is now under surveillance. While the pole it鈥檚 mounted on needed to be replaced, of those five times only once did the actual camera need replacing, a responsibility that falls on the city’s vendor.
But the debate has gained new traction elsewhere as well.
Premier Doug Ford lambasted city councils in May for using the cameras primarily as a revenue source than a safety measure.
“Everyone should be crawling through a school zone, but they鈥檙e putting (speed cameras) all over the place and they鈥檙e creating endless amounts of money,” Ford had said, adding it’s a system . 鈥淧eople aren鈥檛 too happy when they get dinged for 10 kilometres over, five kilometres over. It鈥檚 a revenue tool.鈥
Toronto, for example, generated a total of $40 million last year from its speed cameras with a portion of each fine remitted to the province.聽
More recently,聽Vaughan paused issuing fines to speedy drivers聽after Mayor Steven Del Duca was inundated with complaints from residents raising the issue of “fairness”聽around the city鈥檚 new automated speed enforcement program.
In April,聽海角社区官网announced that 75 new speed cameras聽have been installed throughout the city based on collision and speeding data, bringing the total to 150.
