SIU investigating woman’s death after man’s arrest in Whitby
Durham police arrested a man Wednesday, went to an apartment building believed to be linked to him, and “came to learn” that a woman had fallen from the unit’s balcony, Ontario’s police watchdog has stated.
Ontario’s police watchdog has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the death of a woman in Whitby after she apparently fell Wednesday from an apartment balcony.
On Wednesday morning, Durham police had arrested a man in the area of  as part of an investigation, according to a press release by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) on Wednesday.
After the arrest, officers went to an apartment building on Waller Street, which runs parallel to Thickson on the east side. The building was “believed to have some connection with the man,” the release states.

While officers were in an apartment, the SIU says they “came to learn” that a woman had fallen from the unit’s balcony. Life-saving measures were attempted on the woman, but officers say she was pronounced dead on scene.Â
Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case, according to the SIU.Â
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials that “may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person,” according to the SIU.Â
