Nearly three years after her death, a Scarborough public park has been renamed after city councillor Cynthia Lai.
Lai was elected to city council to represent Scarborough North in 2018 and served as councillor until her death on Oct. 21, 2022.
She died in hospital days before she was expected to be re-elected, where she had spent time campaigning from her bed. Former Mayor John Tory and Premier Doug Ford spoke at her celebration of life.

The park is 4.3 hectares, was chosen alongside Lai’s family and features open green space, horticultural displays and basketball courts.
Mayor Olivia Chow called Lai a “passionate champion” for families and communities in Scarborough.
“Naming Cynthia Lai Park after her is a fitting tribute, as it will forever stand as a place where her mission of creating a better Scarborough and º£½ÇÉçÇø¹ÙÍøcan be enjoyed by all,” she said.
Scarborough North’s current councillor, Jamaal Myers, echoed Lai’s deep care for the city and community.
“She was an advocate for her constituents and was committed to building a city that was more equitable and community-focused. Rosebank Park held a special meaning for her and naming it in her honour ensures that her legacy will live on right here in the heart of our community,” he said.
