There might be another chance to catch the dazzling aurora borealis 鈥 or northern lights 鈥 Sunday night in Ontario, but based on recent forecasts, you might be running out of time.聽
According to the at National Resources Canada, there’s still a “major geomagnetic storm watch” until tomorrow morning. Their forecast, as of Sunday afternoon, noted that “stormy” conditions for most of Canada are expected over the next 24 hours.聽

In this screenshot from the Natural Resources Canada website shows the 24-hour forecast of “stormy” conditions for the ongoing geomagnetic storm.聽
Natural Resources CanadaThe U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which has been providing updates on its website over the rare celestial lights,聽 saying that the ongoing geomagnetic storm from the Sun that has been hitting Earth since Friday will “likely once again become more intense later today.”聽
“Several intense Coronal Mass Ejections are still anticipated to reach the Earth’s outer atmosphere by later today,” it wrote on its site, noting it’s possible for severe storming referred to as a G4+ level intensity.聽

NOAAIn NOAA’s forecast map, the agency is once again predicting a high likelihood of the northern lights appearing tonight for most of Canada, but the view line 鈥 the most southern extent of where the aurora borealis might be visible 鈥 is cutting off around the southern Ontario area, indicating there’s a smaller chance of seeing northern lights as vivid as they were previous nights.聽
NOAA measures the solar storms on a scale from one to five; Friday night to Saturday morning saw the highest G5 level, or extreme conditions, and Saturday night to Sunday morning saw up to the G4 level, or severe conditions. The stronger the level the more likely the storm can cause disruptions with power grids and communications systems like GPS, but there have not been widespread reports of such issues in Canada or the U.S. this weekend.聽
海角社区官网Star readers shared their best shots of the beautiful lights Friday night from across
The solar storm on Friday was the strongest since 2003, and many people in the GTA and southern Ontario stayed up overnight to snap photos of the glowing display of bright neon green, pink, purple and yellow lights.
Robyn Fiori, a senior researcher and duty forecaster within the Canadian Hazards Information Service, told the Star that people in southern Ontario have a possibility of seeing the aurora again.
Fiori said its believed the strongest activity from the celestial events probably occurred on Friday night into Saturday early morning, but there should be some opportunities to see the auroras across the country on Sunday night and in the coming days.
There has been a “very grumpy, active region on the sun” that was responsible for the lights seen on Friday.
“We do know that the same active region had another large solar X-ray flare and another large coronal mass ejection erupt early yesterday morning, and there is a possibility that’s going to arrive sometime late today and into the evening.”
Fiori added that if it were to arrive and the interaction between that聽coronal mass ejection and the geomagnetic field is strong enough, that we could potentially see Northern Lights at low latitudes again.
What Ontario saw Friday night is a ”(once) every 20 years kind of event,” Fiori said.
Live in the GTA and couldn’t see the lights? Here’s why

Aurora borealis filled the sky with colour, Friday evening, May 10, 2024.
Mathew McCarthy Waterloo RegionSome GTA residents weren’t able to catch the neon lights from where they live and Fiori said there are several factors, including light pollution and weather, that could be the cause of the lack of visibility聽
“The best way to see the Northern Lights is to have a clear sky. It has to be dark, so close to midnight or 1 in the morning is usually a really good time” Fiori said.聽
She added that cloudy skies could block the lights from showing up, tied together with the reflections of city lights off the clouds.聽
“It’s always best if you can get away from the lights of the city, especially when you have a little bit of cloud in the sky.” Fiori said.
“Sometimes you can use your camera, even just the camera on your phone, to discern a little bit more of that light than what you can see by the naked eye.”

Renata ValzAccording to the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), the auroras usually appear聽鈥渁 few hours after sunset, when the sky is clear and tends to become more intense around midnight.鈥
Residents in the 海角社区官网area may be in luck to view the possible auroras tonight as Environment Canada has forecasted mostly clear conditions for most of Sunday night before increasing cloudiness begins on Monday overnight around 4 a.m.聽
Clear conditions are expected to start around 10 p.m. tonight and continue until around 3 a.m.聽
What is a geomagnetic storm?

Sharon RamagnanoGeomagnetic storms are major disturbances in Earth鈥檚 magnetic field caused as energy from the sun is transferred to the space environment around Earth,聽. The largest storms are caused by coronal mass ejections聽鈥 when billions of tons of plasma and their attached magnetic fields are launched out from the sun.
This weekend’s storm is the result of at least five simultaneous coronal mass ejections directed toward Earth, which began arriving midday Friday and could persist through Sunday.
鈥淓ven prior to Wednesday, we were experiencing a large number of solar flares,鈥 Dahl said. 鈥淭hese are blasts of strong energy that come from the sun.鈥
鈥淕eomagnetic storms can impact infrastructure in near-Earth orbit and on Earth鈥檚 surface, potentially disrupting communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations,鈥 according to the SWPC. The agency has 鈥渘otified the operators of these systems so they can take protective action.鈥
