Mayor Olivia Chow backs byelection for Scarborough-Rouge Park to ‘uphold local democracy’

Council votes this week on whether the Ward 25 seat left vacant by Jennifer McKelvie should be filled by appointment or through a byelection.

Jennifer McKelvie resigned her Scarborough-Rouge Park seat on º£½ÇÉçÇø¹ÙÍøcouncil earlier this month, after winning a seat in Ajax in the recent federal election.


The council seat in Scarborough-Rouge Park left vacant in the wake of the recent federal election should be filled by holding a byelection, rather than with an appointment, Mayor Olivia Chow says.

In an email to the Star Tuesday, the mayor’s deputy chief of staff, Shirven Rezvany, said Chow’s preference is to “uphold local democracy” by staging a byelection “as quickly as possible.”
