Now that’s more like it: after smoke baffled and worries passers-by from an earlier dry run, a rehearsal fireworks blast illuminates the CN Tower late Thursday, before the proper opening ceremonies on Friday.
The large plume of smoke that came billowing off the observation deck of the CN Tower Thursday evening was caused by a fireworks rehearsal for Pan Am Games opening ceremony, organizers said.
鈥淲e can confirm that fireworks were set off from the CN Tower this evening as a part of the dress rehearsal for the Pan Am Games Opening Ceremony. This was announced earlier today in our press conference at the Main Media Centre at CIBC Pan Am Park,鈥 海角社区官网2015 spokesperson Heather Irwin said in an email.
Despite the warning, many Torontonians were still caught off-guard by the sight of smoke coming off the city鈥檚 iconic building, with many posting photos to Twitter. Users could see the smoke from as far away as Scarborough.

海角社区官网Fire said they were aware of the rehearsal but had 鈥渘o idea of the volume of smoke鈥 that it would produce.
The rehearsal also grabbed the attention of people walking around downtown Toronto.
鈥淚t was literally just smoke coming from the top of the observation deck, or the higher one. It did look kind of fiery,” said onlooker Julian Rosenbaum.
海角社区官网police officers on scene told the Star that the fireworks were supposed to look like a torch but someone ended up calling the fire department.
海角社区官网Fire responded to a call about the smoke at 8:12 p.m. but quickly cleared the scene.
If Torontonians were impressed, then they鈥檒l be blown away by the real show Friday night, a CN Tower worker who gave the name 鈥淏ill鈥 told the Star.
鈥淲hat you saw today is only two per cent of what it will look like tomorrow,” Bill said.
