鈥楾esla gamed the system鈥: Canadian auto dealers 鈥榮tiffed鈥 millions when U.S. giant rushed to claim last EV rebates

鈥淭esla had a run on the bank,鈥 said the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association鈥檚 Huw Williams, describing how the U.S. giant rushed to claim 8,653 EV sales in the final 72 hours of the federal EV rebate.

Oakville auto dealer Terry Budd says he is out more than $150,000 after Tesla jumped to snap up the last of the聽iZEV EV rebates.


More than 200 auto dealers across the country were 鈥渟tiffed鈥 when Tesla 鈥渉ad a run on the bank,鈥 claiming tens of millions of dollars in EV rebates on the last weekend before the government abruptly shut down the public subsidy program in January.

Now these independently owned dealerships are out of pocket an estimated $10 million, having provided 2,295 rebates to customers and expecting to get reimbursed, according to the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association (CADA).
