WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service says it’s assessing the damage after a grassfire spread into an area of commercial and industrial buildings on Monday.
It says in a news release that with extremely dry conditions and high wind speeds, the fire on Gunn Road in the city’s eastern outskirts moved rapidly and firefighters quickly evacuated nearby businesses.
The service says the blaze spread to several nearby buildings before it was brought under control three hours later, but it said it wasn’t known by Monday evening how many structures were lost.

The service says it also contended with grassfires Monday afternoon near Balaban Place, as well as at Rue des Trappistes and the Pembina Highway.
The release says extreme temperatures created challenging conditions for firefighters, and that two firefighters who battled the Gunn Road fire were assessed by paramedics but did not require transport to hospital.Â
The cause of all three fires remains under investigation.
