In the lead-up to Trump’s inauguration in January and through his first four months in office, Trump repeatedly threatened to annex Canada, calling it the “51st state” and referred to former prime minister Justin Trudeau as “governor.” Carney told Trump in their meeting that Canada “won’t be for sale, ever.”
“Never say never,” Trump responded with a shrug.
But both leaders said the meeting was productive. Later, the prime minister’s office said Carney 鈥渓ooked forward to meeting (with Trump) next month at the G7 Summit.鈥
鈥淭he Prime Minister and the President agreed to continue discussions over the coming weeks,鈥 the prime minister’s office said.
Finance ministers from the G7 鈥 an informal group of some of the world’s advanced economies, including Canada and the U.S. 鈥 also met this week in Banff, Alta. in the lead-up to next month’s summit. Discussions included tariffs, which have roiled global markets and the trade system since Trump implemented them on countries around the world.
