Two 海角社区官网dining destinations have been recognized in an inaugural ranking of , while three Canadian spots 鈥 including one in southern Ontario 鈥 were among the top five on the list.聽
Quetzal, an upscale Mexican cuisine restaurant, claimed eleventh on the list. The Japanese-Korean hangout Mhel ranked forty-fourth.聽
And in Lincoln, Ont., in Niagara region, impressively secured third place.聽聽
The list is the first time 50 Best has created a ranking specifically highlighting restaurants across Canada, the U.S. and the Caribbean, according to the organization’s . The brand, which is operated by U.K.-based company William Reed, has published an annual ranking of the best restaurants from around the globe since 2002.聽
Quetzal, found at , was recognized for its open-fire Mexican cuisine and craft cocktails featuring mezcal and tequila.
The restaurant opened in 2018 and was revamped a year later by Steven Molnar, a classically French-trained chef who has worked in top kitchens in Toronto, Montreal and Lyon.聽
The dining space itself is modern, with a bar and open kitchen lined with stools for diners who want to see the action in front of them, according to the 50 Best description. The main feature, however, is the eight-metre-long indoor fire pit where nearly every dish in the restaurant, from roasted sweet potatoes to pork secreto al pastor, is cooked.
The restaurant takes its name from the quetzal bird, which is native to southern Mexico and known for its long, vibrantly coloured tail feathers that once crowned the ceremonial headdresses of Aztec rulers.
The other 海角社区官网dining destination, Mhel, was highlighted as an “intimate neighbourhood hangout” combining a Korean bar and a Japanese pub-style izakaya.
Married team Young Hoon Ji and Seung-min Yi opened the restaurant together, inspired by the meals and drinks they enjoy at home, according to the 50 Best description. Both previously worked in 海角社区官网restaurants before they spent six months in kitchens in Seoul.聽
The couple creates umami-rich dishes using season ingredients from Ontario farms, like Ji’s mother’s napa cabbage Kimchi and purin, a Japanese custard pudding topped with聽Tamarack Farm’s maple syrup. The drink list features sake and sparkling tea alternatives.聽
Mhel’s restaurant space, which is found at , achieves a quaint atmosphere by hosting a maximum of 32 guests at a time. The space features a wood-lined interior and includes 12 bar stools lining its open kitchen.
The name of the restaurant means “anchovy” in the Jeju dialect of Korean spoken in the hometown of Yi’s mother. Anchovies are meaningful for the couple, evoking memories of family and traditions, the website wrote.聽
A total of 11 Canadian restaurants made the list. Mon Lapin, a Montreal spot, ranked second and Restaurant Pearl Morissette, located near Lincoln, Ont.,聽rounded out the podium in third. Restaurant Pearl Morissette was also named the best dining destination in Central Canada for 2025.聽
Chef-owners Daniel Hadida and Eric Robertson opened Restaurant Pearl Morissette in November 2017. It’s known for its thoughtfully crafted, French-inspired farmhouse cuisine, 50 Best wrote in its ranking.聽
The dining room is located on the second floor above Pearl Morissette Estate winery, offering views of the large regenerative farm, peach orchard, and vegetable, herb, and flower gardens.
The list was created based on the votes of 300 chefs, restaurateurs, food and beverage journalists, educators and well-travelled gourmets, the organization said. Voters named their eight best restaurant experiences of any kind across a two-year polling period, and restaurants did not have to fit any criteria or pay any fees to be considered.
