Legendary Canadian filmmakers David Cronenberg and Guy Maddin will premiere their latest movies at the Cannes Film Festival (May 14 to 25), in a banner year for Canada at the world鈥檚 most prestigious film fest.
Cronenberg, 81, will unveil his sci-fi thriller “The Shrouds鈥 in the Palme d鈥橭r competition, his seventh bid for one of the top prizes of cinema. It鈥檚 one of 19 films competing for the Palme, which also includes new movies from Francis Ford Coppola (鈥淢egalopolis鈥), Yorgos Lanthimos (鈥淜inds of Kindness鈥) and Ali Abassi (鈥淭he Apprentice鈥), all part of the Official Selection for the fest鈥檚 77th edition, announced early Thursday in Paris.
鈥淭he Shrouds鈥 stars Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Guy Pearce and Sandrine Holt in the story of a cemetery owner and grieving widower who invents a controversial device to monitor the dead.
鈥淏eing selected for the Cannes Film Festival is an immense honour, but to return for the seventh time is incredibly humbling. I look forward to sharing this film with the world on such a prestigious stage,鈥 Cronenberg said in a press release. The 海角社区官网writer-director was last at Cannes in 2022 with 鈥淐rimes of the Future,鈥 which also competed for the Palme.
Kruger has described 鈥淭he Shrouds鈥 as Cronenberg鈥檚 鈥渕ost personal film鈥 in his decades-long career. The film was inspired in part by the 2017 passing of his beloved wife, Carolyn, to whom he was married for 38 years.
鈥淚 was very emotional making it, because I knew it was so close to him and he was a little bit detached because of it,鈥 Kruger told Variety. 鈥淚 could feel him being so vulnerable.鈥
Winnipeg-born director Maddin, 68, is making his Cannes feature debut with the political satire 鈥淩umours,鈥 which he co-directed with his frequent collaborators Evan and Galen Johnson. It stars Cate Blanchett, Alicia Vikander and Roy Dupuis in the undoubtedly wild tale of a group of world leaders who become stranded in a forest during a climate crisis meeting.
It will screen out of competition at Cannes, which is still a huge honour for an iconoclastic filmmaker whose avant-garde works such as 鈥淢y Winnipeg鈥 and 鈥淭he Saddest Music in the World鈥 have simultaneously saluted and mocked cinema conventions.
Maddin previously had a short film at Cannes, the silent-era tribute 鈥淭he Heart of the World,鈥 which screened in 2001 in the Director鈥檚 Fortnight sidebar. He said via email he 鈥渉ad no idea鈥 of it at the time.
鈥淚 remember the film鈥檚 producer, Niv Fichman, telling me it was going to Cannes, but he made it sound like it was playing on a monitor in a tent on the beach. I never gave it another thought. But now, to have a feature there, and in a permanent theatre, too 鈥 that’s another matter. I guess it was in our plans all along, part of my 42-year plan to get a feature into Cannes.鈥

Sebastian Stan (right) stars as Donald Trump and Jeremy Strong (left) as his lawyer and mentor in Ali Abassi鈥檚 鈥淭he Apprentice,鈥 one of 19 films competing for the Palme d鈥橭r at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Set in 1970s-80s NYC, the film was shot in Ontario, in Toronto, Hamilton and Uxbridge.聽
Courtesy Cannes Film FestivalCanada, specifically Ontario, also plays a starring role in what is sure to be one of the most talked-about movies in the Palme contest: Iranian-Danish filmmaker Ali Abassi鈥檚 鈥淭he Apprentice,鈥 which was shot in Toronto, Hamilton and Uxbridge. It鈥檚 a dramatic biopic about Donald Trump鈥檚 early days as a real estate hustler in the New York City of the 1970-80s, when the young future U.S. president was wheeling and dealing alongside Roy Cohn, his right-wing lawyer and mentor.
Trump is played by Sebastian Stan, the actor behind conflicted hero Bucky Barnes in Marvel鈥檚 鈥淐aptain America鈥 movies. Jeremy Strong, of TV鈥檚 鈥淪uccession,鈥 takes the role of Cohn. Maria Bakalova of 鈥淏orat鈥 comedy fame plays Trump鈥檚 first wife, Ivana, who died in 2022, and young Canadian actress Emily Mitchell, part of the cast of Sarah Polley鈥檚 鈥淲omen Talking,鈥 plays Trump鈥檚 daughter, Ivanka.
Canada is front and centre in Paul Schrader鈥檚 competition drama 鈥淥h Canada,鈥 which stars Jacob Elordi, Uma Thurman, Richard Gere, Michael Imperioli and Kristine Froseth in a story of an American leftist/documentary filmmaker who fled here to avoid the Vietnam War draft. On his deathbed in Montreal, he鈥檚 eager to confess the secrets and lies of his life to a documentary crew as 鈥渄emythologize his mythologized life.鈥 The story is based on a 2021 novel by the late Russell Banks. 鈥淭he Sweet Hereafter,鈥 an earlier novel by the U.S. author, was adapted by Toronto鈥檚 Atom Egoyan for a film by the same name that won the Grand Prix, the second-place prize, at Cannes in 1997.
Another major coup for the Cannes competition, which will be judged by an international jury led by 鈥淏arbie鈥 writer-director Greta Gerwig, is the world premiere of Coppola鈥檚 long-awaited dystopian epic, 鈥淢egalopolis.鈥 The film has drawn both raves and raspberries at secret industry previews.
It鈥檚 the first feature in 13 years from the 85-year-old Coppola, who has won the Palme twice in his storied career: for 鈥淭he Conversation鈥 in 1974 and 鈥淎pocalypse Now鈥 in 1979.
Cannes festival director Thierry Fr茅maux said he鈥檚 honoured to have Coppola competing for a possible third Palme, with a film crowded with boldface: Adam Driver,聽Shia LaBeouf, Aubrey Plaza, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Dustin Hoffman, Giancarlo Esposito and 鈥淪aturday Night Live鈥 player Chloe Fineman. There was reportedly a festival bidding war over 鈥淢egalopolis,鈥 with the Venice and 海角社区官网festivals competing with Cannes to host the world premiere.
Other competition highlights include: 鈥淜inds of Kindness,鈥 a three-part film reuniting Greek satirist Lanthimos with his 鈥淧oor Things鈥 star Emma Stone (a recent Oscar winner for the role) and fellow 鈥淧oor Things鈥 alumni Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley; 鈥淏ird,鈥 starring Barry Keoghan and Franz Rogowski, from 鈥淎merican Honey鈥 director Andrea Arnold, one of four women directors competing for the Palme; 鈥淧arthenope鈥 by Italy鈥檚 Paolo Sorrentino (鈥淭he Great Beauty鈥), starring Gary Oldman and Stefania Sandrelli in the tale of a woman who could be 鈥渁 siren or a myth鈥; and 鈥淓milia Perez,鈥 a musical melodrama by France鈥檚 Jacques Audiard, starring Zo毛 Salda帽a and Selena Gomez.

Emma Stone, fresh off her Best Actress win for 鈥淧oor Things,鈥 reunites with the film’s director, Yorgos Lanthimos, for a three-part film called 鈥淜inds of Kindness.鈥澛
Courtesy of Cannes Film FestivalFr茅maux said Thursday he鈥檒l be adding as many as three more films to the competition in the days ahead. Films previously announced for Cannes 2024, all premiering out of competition, include George Miller鈥檚 road warrior prequel, 鈥淔uriosa: A Mad Max Saga,鈥 the first chapter of Kevin Costner鈥檚 multi-act western 鈥淗orizon, an American Saga鈥; and Quentin Dupieux鈥檚 road comedy 鈥淭he Second Act,鈥 which will open the fest.
Fr茅maux said he believes his programmers have assembled a festival to rival last year鈥檚 triumph, which saw three Cannes premieres 鈥 Martin Scorsese鈥檚 鈥淜illers of the Flower Moon,鈥 Justine Triet鈥檚 鈥淎natomy of a Fall鈥 and Jonathan Glazer鈥檚 鈥淭he Zone of Interest鈥 鈥 go on to compete for best picture at the Academy Awards.
Cannes president Iris Knobloch, with Fr茅maux at Thursday鈥檚 announcement, said this year鈥檚 Official Selection will 鈥減rove wrong the Cassandras who have predicted the demise of movie theatres. The magic of the wide screen is intact.鈥
