鈥淢urder in the Family,鈥 which ranks No. 2 on the Original fiction list this week, marks the debut of the popular British thriller writer Cara Hunter in North American markets. She鈥檚 best known for her six-book series featuring Detective Inspector Adam Fawley. The new book, a stand-alone, includes transcripts of a true crime TV program, 鈥淚nfamous,鈥 that seeks to solve a cold case involving a man murdered in his garden in 2003. Cops, experts and people involved in the original case seek to clear it up once and for all. Readers, of course, are urged to be part of the investigation.
On the fiction list at No. 3 is 鈥淭he Last Devil to Die,鈥 the fourth in the series of Thursday Murder Mysteries by another Brit, Richard Osman.
And perhaps the most noteworthy newcomer to the fiction list: 鈥淣ever Whistle at Night: An Indigenous Dark Fiction Anthology,鈥 edited by Shane Hawk and Theodore C. Van Alst Jr. The contributors include an international group of Indigenous writers and the title references the myth in many cultures that whistling at night brings forth evil spirits. Publisher Random House has a marketing blurb that made me smile: 鈥淎 bold, clever, and sublimely sinister collection that dares ask the question: 鈥淎re you ready to be unsettled?鈥
Two other noteworthy Indigenous books that made the Children and Young Adult list this week are 鈥淲ith Our Orange Hearts鈥 and 鈥淓very Child Matters,鈥 both by Phyllis Webstad and published by Medicine Wheel. Webstad, a M茅tis from the Canoe Creek Indian Band, is the founder of the Orange Shirt Day movement, which encourages children and their families to honour residential school survivors each year on Sept. 30.
And finally, while Walter Isaacson鈥檚 鈥淓lon Musk鈥 holds steady at No. 1 among The Star鈥檚 non-fiction bestsellers, it was not the overall bestselling book last week across all categories. That distinction goes to 鈥淔raiche Food, Fuller Hearts: Wholesome Everyday Recipes Made with Love,鈥 by Canadian cousins Jillian Harris and Tori Wesszer, a follow-up to 2019鈥檚 鈥淔raiche Food, Full Hearts.鈥
