The Maple Leafs went all-in on their bid for a Stanley Cup 鈥 at 25 per cent of the cost.
The Leafs pulled off a three-way deal on Sunday, acquiring Columbus captain Nick Foligno, a veteran forward who promises to bring more of the grit and experience the club sought in the off-season by adding Wayne Simmonds, Joe Thornton, Zach Bogosian, and T.J. Brodie.
鈥淚鈥檓 a guy that plays off his heart, his gut,鈥 Foligno said after the trade was announced. 鈥淢y heart told me this was the right move.鈥

General manager Kyle Dubas worked out the swap, which also involved the San Jose Sharks, early Sunday evening, with Foligno鈥檚 $5.5-million salary-cap hit split three ways.
The Leafs get Foligno from the Blue Jackets, and forward Stefan Noesen from the Sharks.
Columbus gets Toronto鈥檚 first-round pick in 2021 and a fourth-rounder in 2022, while retaining half of Foligno鈥檚 salary.
San Jose gets Toronto鈥檚 fourth-round pick in 2022, while retaining half of the remainder of Foligno鈥檚 salary. With 15 games left in a 56-game season, 海角社区官网essentially gets Foligno for about a quarter of his cap hit ($1.375 million).
Foligno, 33, was born in Buffalo and was Ottawa鈥檚 first round pick in 2006. He has spent the past nine seasons with Columbus and was instrumental in helping the Jackets upset the Leafs in the first round of the playoffs last season.
鈥淚t was an emotional couple days,鈥 said Foligno. 鈥淚 have the utmost respect for Jarmo (Kekalainen, Blue Jackets GM) and how he brought this to my attention. Just talking about if there was something that made sense for the team, that he would try to keep me in the loop and that meant a lot.鈥
Foligno and Noesen will both have to cross the border and clear the NHL鈥檚 seven-day COVID isolation and testing protocol upon arrival in Toronto. That means Foligno鈥檚 potential first game with 海角社区官网is April 21 in Winnipeg.
Noesen, 28, has a $925,000 cap hit this season, but he has cleared waivers and is expected to start with the Marlies after splitting this season with San Jose and the San Jose Barracuda of the AHL. He has played five games with the Sharks鈥 fourth line this season.
According to a report out of Columbus, Foligno is a rental and expected to re-sign with Columbus as a free agent this summer.
