Nicholas Robertson wore an A on his jersey and did what he does best: score.
Robertson, Calle J盲rnkrok and William Villeneuve scored in the first period and the Maple Leafs beat the Senators 4-3 in Ottawa to kick off the NHL exhibition season on Sunday.
Matthew Barbolini鈥檚 second-period goal on a power play stood up as the winner for a Leafs team of mostly depth players, prospects and those destined for the AHL’s Marlies.
Robertson was also the only scorer in Saturday’s scrimmage and seems focused on keeping his job in a very competitive camp.
With Joseph Woll ill, goalie Artur Akhtyamov got the win by stopping 15 of 16 shots from a Senators squad that featured stars Brady Tkachuk, Tim St眉tzle and Thomas Chabot.
Vyacheslav Peksa took over in net for the third period and allowed two goals on 18 shots.
Like every Battle of Ontario, it had an edge with Toronto鈥檚 Marshall Rifai and Ottawa鈥檚 Zack MacEwen earning fighting majors.
Music after Marner
It鈥檚 not just the top line, power play and penalty kill where Mitch Marner’s departure has left a gaping hole. It鈥檚 also the music in the dressing room. No one else could get near the speaker system when Marner was around.
鈥淚 hope I get a chance on the (auxiliary) cord,鈥 said forward Scott Laughton. 鈥淭here鈥檚 a couple of guys who play the music. I鈥檓 going to put my bid in.鈥
He prefers house music and The Tragically Hip: 鈥淚 mix it up. In the summer I was more old school, lighter, Van Morrison and things like that.鈥
William Nylander (鈥渓ittle bit of everything鈥) and Morgan Rielly play their music, Laughton added: 鈥淚 won鈥檛 say what we鈥檝e been listening to lately, but it鈥檚 a banger.鈥澛
So, not Taylor Swift?
鈥淪ame genre,鈥 he said.
Lettieri and family
Centre Vinni Lettieri, who signed as a free agent after spending last season with the Boston Bruins, comes from sporting royalty.
His grandfather (on his mother鈥檚 side) is Lou Nanne, who played for, coached and managed the Minnesota North Stars and remains a huge voice in Minnesota and USA Hockey. Lettieri鈥檚 father Tino, meanwhile, represented Canada as a goalkeeper in soccer, including at the 1986 World Cup, and went on to play pro in Minnesota and elsewhere. So, the new Leaf played both sports growing up.
鈥淚 was just kind of waiting to hang up the cleats,鈥 said Lettieri. 鈥淚 didn’t think my passion was the same for soccer as it was for hockey. I just felt so bad ... letting down my dad, because obviously if you’re a soccer player you want your kid to play soccer. But he played hockey growing up, too, so he didn’t really care that much.鈥
OHLers cut
The Leafs’ first cuts were made Saturday, all OHL players: defencemen Rylan Fellinger (Flint) and Nathan Mayes (Spokane) as well as forwards Tyler Hopkins (Kingston), Harry Nansi (Owen Sound), Matthew Hlacar (Kitchener) and Sam McCue (Brantford).
