TheÌýNew Democratic Party is in dire straights after what may be its worstÌýelectionÌýperformance in history.

The party had won or was leading in seven ridings as of early Tuesday afternoonÌý—Ìýfewer than a third of its 24 seats going into the election. As a result, it will lose its official party status in the House of Commons, as well as the privileges attached to the designation.
