A form of accountability journalism where reporters test the veracity of statements and/or assertions using a variety of credible, authoritative sources to root out falsehoods.
After spending a week listening to Liberal Leader Mark Carney deliver speeches or go granular on trade details with a high-profile U.S. podcaster, it is clear that he聽鈥 mostly聽鈥 flies close to the facts.
But first, a public service announcement. Thanks to scheduling by the Leaders鈥 Debate Commission, Carney鈥檚 time behind the podium at the French and English debates coincided with our week spent seemingly listening to his every word. Before reading further, please be aware that we did not fact check Carney during last week’s debates. In the spirit of fairness, it would not be cool to hold him to account without also doing the same for Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and the NDP鈥檚 Jagmeet Singh. And they鈥檝e already had their turn.
Let鈥檚 also note that according to Star parameters, we examined Carney鈥檚 comments and social media posts from Sunday, April 13 to Saturday, April 19. If three weeks ago he said something outrageous (in the mind of a quintessential 20-something male Conservative supporter who we may have encountered during Easter dinner), it will not appear in this piece. Nor will campaign promises, because the Star cannot fact check the future.

Back to Carney. As the former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, he is deeply comfortable with the arcane and we appreciate the quiet insight provided by experts on climate change or economic policy when the answers seemed a touch obscure. As noted, we caught Carney during a week of national debates when candidates typically spend more time in so-called war rooms preparing for politically consequential discourse rather than making multiple campaign stops 鈥 so it is likely we did not have a full shot at his views.
Please enjoy our final entry in the Star鈥檚 fact checking series.
