The Super Bowl, between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles, is already a high-stakes event with intense security. Earlier Tuesday, Homeland Security secretary Kristi Noem is “working around the clock to ensure a safe and secure game day.”
It comes six weeks after a 42-year-old man killed 14 people on New Orleans’ crowded Bourbon Street in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
“Right now, we have no specific credible threats to this event,” Noem told reporters Monday. “We recognize the importance of making sure that we’re doing due diligence and being prepared for events as proactive as possible.”
Officials had planned to have more than 2,700 federal, state and local law enforcement members at the game, although that will likely change with Trump’s planned attendance.
Trump will also appear on Fox News’ Super Bowl pre-game show in a pretaped interview with anchor Bret Baier, the network announced Monday. It will focus on Trump’s first 100 days and the change his administration has already enacted, Fox said in a press release.
Trump has previously lambasted NFL players for kneeling during the U.S. national anthem, saying they “shouldn’t be playing, you shouldn’t be there, maybe you shouldn’t be in the country.” He also said he would love to see team owners fire players who kneel.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday he doesn’t believe the league’s diversity-promoting policies 鈥 including the Rooney Rule, requiring teams to interview diverse candidates for coaching and front office positions 鈥 are at odds with the Trump administration.
Several NFL owners contributed to Trump’s campaign and other conservative causes during the 2024 election.
鈥淥ur owners participate in everything that we do,鈥 Goodell said. 鈥淥ur policies have been designed to be well within the law, well within the practice. There are no quotas in our system. This is about opening that funnel and bringing the best talent into the NFL.”
The Chiefs, led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, have won the last two Super Bowls and are looking to become the first team in NFL history to win three straight. Taylor Swift, who is dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, may also be in attendance.
The game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and will feature a halftime show by Kendrick Lamar.
