TEHRAN, Iran (AP) 鈥 Iran鈥檚 supreme leader on Tuesday pushed back against U.S. criticism of the country鈥檚 nuclear program, saying that Tehran won鈥檛 seek permission from anyone to enrich uranium and calling American statements 鈥渘onsense.鈥
鈥淭hey say, 鈥榃e won鈥檛 allow Iran to enrich uranium.鈥 That鈥檚 way out of line,鈥 Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said during a memorial for late President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash last year. 鈥淣o one in Iran is waiting for their permission. The Islamic Republic has its own policies and direction 鈥 and it will stick to them.鈥
Khamenei鈥檚 remarks came as indirect talks between Iran and the U.S. reportedly continue, though he expressed doubt about their outcome.

鈥淵es, indirect negotiations were held during Raisi鈥檚 time too, just like now,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ut they didn鈥檛 go anywhere 鈥 and we don鈥檛 expect much from the current ones either. Who knows what will happen.鈥
His comments reflect Tehran鈥檚 growing frustration with the stalled nuclear discussions, as well as the broader tensions that have defined U.S.-Iran relations in recent years.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei told the state-run IRNA news agency that 鈥渘o definitive decision has been made about the next round of negotiations,鈥 adding that 鈥渢he Islamic Republic of Iran is reviewing the matter while considering the U.S. side鈥檚 contradictory and constantly changing positions.鈥
IRNA also reported that Kazem Gharibabadi, the deputy foreign minister, said that Tehran had received a proposal regarding the next round of indirect talks with Washington and was currently reviewing it.
