WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) 鈥 The unofficial national fruit of New Zealand isn鈥檛 native to the country 鈥 it鈥檚 South American. It isn鈥檛 exclusively found in New Zealand. And it鈥檚 not, perhaps surprisingly, the kiwi. It鈥檚 the feijoa.

Known as pineapple guava elsewhere, the fruit 鈥 a green perfumed oval with a polarizing taste 鈥 can be purchased in California or Canberra. Yet no country has embraced the feijoa with quite the fervor or the fixation of New Zealanders.
