MATHARE, Kenya (AP) 鈥 Joseph Kariaga and his friends once lived the 鈥済angster life鈥 in Nairobi鈥檚 Mathare slum, snatching phones, mugging people and battling police. But when Kariaga’s brother was shot dead by police, the young men took stock.

鈥淲e said, ‘We cannot live like this. We are going to lose our lives.鈥 Many of our friends had died,鈥 said Kariaga, now 27. 鈥淚 reflected on my life. I had to change.鈥
