Mercury fuels gold mining in Senegal. And it鈥檚 poisoning the people who use it

She empties a dime-sized packet of the silvery liquid into a plastic bucket of muddy sediment outside her home in southeastern Senegal. With bare hands and no mask, she swirls the mixture as her children look on.

鈥淚 know mercury isn鈥檛 good for your health 鈥 that鈥檚 why I don鈥檛 drink the water it comes into contact with,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 only process small amounts of gold, so there鈥檚 no danger.鈥
