Drivers on Highway 400 near Aurora had to moo-ve over carefully on Friday.Â
Seven cows escaped their enclosure just after 2 p.m. and wandered onto the highway, between Highway 9 and Aurora Road. The cows were causing “heavy delays” and a “huge impact on traffic” in both directions during a busy commute before the long weekend, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said in multiple videos .
“Cows running up and down the highway here,” Schmidt said, adding the cattle are “not too co-operative.” Schmidt posted a followup video showing one of the cows staring at him and looking unbothered by the havoc it was causing.
The cows were off the highway by 7 p.m. and no longer affecting traffic, Schmidt told the Star. But he added that there remained plenty of long weekend-related congestion in the area.Â

Although they were off the highway, the cattle’s owners were still working to get them back to the farm on Friday evening, the OPP said in an update. Police were joined by farmers and provincial transportation workers through the afternoon on Friday to wrangle the escapees into trailers.
 Four other cows ran off into a field, “way off the highway,” and two have been recovered, Schmidt said.
The cattle had been on the lam for several hours as Schmidt said efforts were still underway at just after 5 p.m. to “slowly” guide them back to a safe place.Â
Hwy. 400 is moving again though Schmidt said it is still “very slow.”
