Billionaire Elon Musk聽blamed a “massive cyberattack” for the extended outage of his social media platform X on Monday.
Outages spiked three times Monday morning, with as many as 44,000 users across Canada and the U.S. reporting outages to at its peak. The issues began shortly before 6 a.m., but by afternoon, the reports had dropped to the low thousands.
Later on Monday, Musk said on the Fox Business Network show 鈥淜udlow鈥 that the attackers had 鈥淚P addresses originating in the Ukraine area鈥 without going into detail on what this might mean.

Cybersecurity experts quickly pointed out, however, that this doesn’t necessarily mean that an attack originated in Ukraine. Security researcher Kevin Beaumont said on Bluesky that Musk’s claim is 鈥渕issing a key fact 鈥 it was actually IPs from worldwide, not just Ukraine.鈥
Specifically, he said it was a Mirai variant botnet, which is made of compromised cameras. He said while he is not sure who is behind the attack, it 鈥渟mells of APTs 鈥 advanced persistent teenagers.鈥
Allan Liska of the cybersecurity firm Recorded Future, meanwhile, pointed out that even if 鈥渆very IP address that hit Twitter today originated from Ukraine (doubtful), they were most likely compromised machines controlled by a botnet run by a third party that could be located anywhere in the world.鈥
A group of hackers claimed responsibility for the attack and plugged their own cryptocurrency in a Telegram post early Monday afternoon. The Star could not confirm the veracity of the group’s claim.聽
There have also been recent protests聽against Musk-owned Tesla and the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE for short. The department has cut tens of thousands of federal jobs in the first seven weeks of U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration.
Protesters also gathered outside Tesla stores across the U.S. earlier this month in response to Musk’s efforts to slash government spending. Tesla facilities have also been targeted by graffiti and arson, according to U.S. media reports.聽

X did not respond to the Star’s request for comment.
Musk bought X in October 2022 and laid off more than 6,000 employees 鈥 80 per cent of the company’s workforce 鈥 over the next six months, he told the BBC in an interview. He rebranded the platform from Twitter to X in July 2023.
