A summer intrigue, a worrisome bromance, a notorious western, a thrilling final mission and a horrifying family secret. Here are the five movies I鈥檓 most looking forward to in May:

Claes Bang, Lily McInerny and Chlo毛 Sevigny in聽鈥淏onjour Tristesse.鈥
Elevation PicturesBonjour Tristesse (May 2)
Picture this French Riviera idyll: C茅cile (Lily McInerny), 18 and fluent in ennui, drifts through sun and salt with her summer boyfriend, Cyril (Aliocha Schneider), her rakish widowed father, Raymond (Claes Bang), and his winsome companion, Elsa (Na茂lia Harzoune). Enter Anne (Chlo毛 Sevigny), a friend of C茅cile鈥檚 late mother, who arrives like a winter wind. Schemes hatch, hearts collide, and novelist Fran莽oise Sagan鈥檚 coming-of-age classic is reborn as a study in female intrigue and sunburnt regret, courtesy of Montreal writer-director Durga Chew-Bose. Sevigny, known for sexually provocative film roles, aims at McInerny the gaze of someone who knows the attraction of lust and the danger of jealousy.
What鈥檚 the buzz: A favourite of film fests, 鈥淏onjour Tristesse鈥 is the debut feature by Chew-Bose, the recipient of the 2024 TIFF Emerging Talent Award.
Why I鈥檓 excited: It makes me think of the summer heat of 鈥淐all Me by Your Name鈥 and 鈥淧arthenope,鈥 two films where the look is as important as the loving. Chew-Bose has a great eye; she鈥檚 鈥渁live to the smallest things,鈥 as one character says of another.
Rust (May 9)
Set on the unsettled prairies of 1880s Kansas, Joel Souza鈥檚 tragic western stars Alec Baldwin as Harland Rust, a notorious outlaw who emerges from hiding when his 13-year-old grandson is sentenced to hang after accidentally killing a rancher. Rust busts the boy out of jail, and together they flee across the harsh landscape, pursued by a relentless U.S. Marshal and a ruthless bounty hunter. Frances Fisher appears as Lucas鈥檚 great-aunt, grounding the family鈥檚 story. Against the film鈥檚 sweeping western backdrop, “Rust” explores themes of guilt, redemption and the heavy cost of loyalty.
What鈥檚 the buzz: Could there be a more fraught publicity photo than the one of Baldwin brandishing a firearm? This is the 鈥減assion project鈥 the actor-producer was making in 2021 when a prop gun he thought wasn鈥檛 loaded killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounded writer-director Souza.聽
Why I鈥檓 excited: Hutchins was a promising cinematographer, much respected by her peers. Advance word on her 鈥淩ust鈥 lensing is positive. Let鈥檚 hope respectful admiration will replace morbid curiosity.

Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd star in the comedy 鈥淔riendship.”
VVS FilmsFriendship (May 16)
Genre blender Andrew DeYoung (TV’s 鈥淥ur Flag Means Death鈥) writes and directs a dark comedy of suburban malaise and cringy consequences. Meet Craig Waterman (Tim Robinson), a friendless dad who yearns for connection. His world is upended by the arrival of new neighbour Austin Carmichael (Paul Rudd), a TV weatherman whose all-too-easy charm only magnifies Craig鈥檚 social awkwardness. As Craig makes increasingly desperate attempts to bond with Austin, much to the dismay of his wife, Tami (Kate Mara), and son Steven (Jack Dylan Grazer), the film explores the lonely discomfort of modern adulthood, where embarrassment is always just one door away.
What鈥檚 the buzz: It鈥檚 being compared to Robinson鈥檚 work on the cult TV hit 鈥淚 Think You Should Leave,鈥 which makes it a must-see. And Rudd and Mara are naturals for comedy that鈥檚 鈥渉uh?鈥 as well as 鈥渉ah-hah.鈥
Why I鈥檓 excited: I dug Rudd in 鈥淚 Love You, Man,鈥 the 2009 bromance co-starring Jason Segel that explored male bonding in a more conventionally comic manner. 鈥淔riendship鈥 sounds like the unsettling flip side, and also a bit like 鈥淐huck & Buck,鈥 an early gem from Mike White (鈥淭he White Lotus鈥).

Tom Cruise leads the team as super spy Ethan Hunt in 鈥淢ission: Impossible 鈥 The Final Reckoning.鈥澛
Paramount PicturesMission: Impossible 鈥 The Final Reckoning (May 23)
AI was but a twinkle in a mad scientist鈥檚 eye when the 鈥淢ission: Impossible鈥 movie franchise debuted in 1996. Now it has a name 鈥 the Entity 鈥 and a penchant for cataclysmic mischief. 鈥淭he Final Reckoning,鈥 aka 鈥淢:I 鈥 8,鈥 from director Christopher McQuarrie, trumpets a last hurrah for Tom Cruise鈥檚 super spy Ethan Hunt, with tag lines and trailers that whisper retirement. Yet, as long as he鈥檚 still dangling from aircraft like a man allergic to gravity and good sense, perhaps the IMF pension plan should remain just out of reach. With Cruise, the only thing truly impossible is predicting when he鈥檒l finally let go.
What鈥檚 the buzz: As one of the summer鈥檚 biggest blockbusters, with a reported $400-million (U.S.) budget, 鈥淢:I-8鈥 is getting a Cannes Film Festival world premiere next month. Hard to top that for advance hype, but Cruise will surely think of something 鈥 maybe another fighter-jet flyover like the one for 鈥淭op Gun: Maverick鈥 at Cannes in 2022?
Why I鈥檓 excited: The 鈥淢:I鈥 films have been hit-or-miss over the years but how could anyone skip the final chapter? And Cruise always delivers with his insane action sequences.

Sally Hawkins stars in the horror film 鈥淏ring Her Back.
A24/Elevation PicturesBring Her Back (May 30)
Aussie horror twins Danny and Michael Philippou supply scares with a supernatural saga of two siblings, Andy (Billy Barratt) and Piper (Sora Wong), who are placed with a mysterious foster parent following the death of their mother. As they adjust to life in the remote home of foster mom Laura (Sally Hawkins), they meet a new sibling and uncover a chilling secret. The story blends supernatural horror with psychological trauma as the siblings confront the sinister forces within their new family.
What鈥檚 the buzz: The Philippou bros knocked it out of the park with their 2022 hit 鈥淭alk to Me,鈥 so expectations are high and goosebumps are rising for their new feature.
Why I鈥檓 excited: It鈥檚 a horror film from A24, the home of 鈥淗ereditary鈥 and 鈥淟onglegs,鈥 and that always demands a look. I鈥檓 also a fan of the Philippous’ low-budget and lo-fi approach.
